MAGGI, PIERCE AND E.J. STRIKE GOLD WITH 5TH CD
Critical Acclaim Mounts as Spring Tour Begins

MPE b&w stage shotPHILADELPHIA MAGGI, PIERCE AND E.J.s fifth CD is striking gold, just like they ordained it, as the far-out Philly funk trio mounts its spring U.S. tour.

As the band is touring the East Coast and Midwest, GOLD (EMPrecords), the latest and most intriguing example of MAGGI, PIERCE AND E.J.s self-described down-home farm-city junk music is beginning to score with critics and some of the nations most prestigious adult radio programmers.

Citing harmonies that recall the Roches, a daffy sense of humor that reminds you of the Barenaked Ladies and a hipster drollness that echoes Beck, the Cineman Syndicate declares: GOLD is an album that should go gold. Playback St. Louis, in its April issue, calls GOLD "Gregarious, inclusive, whimsical, charming, psychedelicate, organic, fat-free, unpredictable, neighborly, fizzy, wide-eyed, folksy, energized, propulsive, sweet, celebratory, multi-purpose, wry, hams on rye, therapeutic, uplifting, unzipped, stir-fried, ineffable, focused, romantic, touching, rib-tickling, unselfish, inspired, musically freewheeling and unforgettable."

ï¿½Flame, which opens GOLD as a metaphor for the love of nature and the need for romantic commitment, with a mournful trumpet arrangement, has become a high-ranking Open Mic favorite on NPRs All Songs Considered. Flame also has become a favorite track at Philadelphias award-winning Triple A station WXPN, home of the nationally syndicated World Caf, where GOLD has been receiving regular airplay for most of the first quarter of 2004.

bio
The Philadelphia based trio, Maggi, Pierce And E.J. like to get hearts soaring, lips laughing, brains racing and feet jumping. Their "down-home farm-city junk music" has awed and inspired audiences all over the U.S. and Europe, leaving them cheering for more and groping for description at the same time.

Equally at home in a pin-drop intimate cafe with acoustic guitar, mandolin and dumbek, or a rowdy, rockin' club with screamin' Stratocaster, slammin' drums and thunderous bass, it's Maggi, Pierce And E.J.'s trademark, intricate three-part harmonies that ground and unify their inspired sound.

As utterly unique and groundbreaking as MPEband's live shows are, it's the songs on their 5 self-titled CD's (identified by colour) that truly drive home their undeniable talent as exceptional songwriters and musicians. Writing as a group, in pairs and individually, their songs range from acoustic lullabies to raucous party stompers, to hypnotic soulscapes.

Trying to pigeonhole a band's sound is often difficult, but in this case, impossible. Their Chinese fire-drill instrumentation, lush harmonies, unshakable melodies and seat of the pants spontaneity, create one helluva roller coaster ride of a live show!

"Abba meets Zappa" "Fleetwood Mac meets the Pixies" "Ween meets Joni Mitchell" "Bette Midler meets Wilco" "Sonic Youth meets the Beatles" - these are but a few attempts to label what is truly the magic of Maggi, Pierce And E.J.
